Salinas, Calif. – The Hartnell College Foundation and the K-12 STEAM Program proudly presents the 19^thAnnual STEAM Family Science Day on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hartnell College, 411 Central Avenue in Salinas. Parking will be free.

This is an event to be enjoyed by all age groups, to engage in fun STEAM activities and learn about STEM at Hartnell College. Student clubs, staff, and faculty will highlight innovation and the fantastic world of science to inspire the next generation of scientists in the Salinas Valley.

“I am deeply honored to support the vision of our local educational champions, STEAM collaborators, and industry partners in creating pathways and opportunities that empower students to develop intrinsic agency in shaping a bright, prosperous future for the Salinas Valley,” said Ana Ibarra-Castro, director of K-12 STEAM Programs at Hartnell College Foundation.  “Every contribution from this vibrant, collaborative ecosystem will generate meaningful, far-reaching ripple effects for our talented students to thrive.” 

For the first time this year, Family Science Day is set to host a groundbreaking series of innovative local STEM events, competitions, and inspiring speakers that promise an engaging and educational experience for the entire family. One of these events is the distinguished Monterey County Science & Engineering Fair, which will exhibit remarkable science projects authored by some of the most talented high school students across the county. 

“The 2025 Monterey County Science & Engineering Fair at Hartnell College is more than a competition—it’s an opportunity to elevate all young innovators! We are thrilled to provide nearly 100 students from 6th-12th grade with a platform to showcase their inquiry, creativity, and problem-solving skills,” said Maria Parker, STEAM coordinator for Monterey County Office of Education. “With over 15 schools and districts participating, we are ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds have access to pathways in STEAM.”

The Hartnell College Foundation is also hosting the first of its kind, Salinas City Elementary School District (SCESD) regional Invention Convention competition alongside a dedicated Computer Science spotlight. This culminating event will showcase the creativity of young inventors as they experienced the power of imagination and invention education. 

“I am thrilled that we are the pioneers bringing Invention Convention to SCESD - the California Invention Convention serves as an inspiring platform for young innovators, showcasing the power of creativity and collaboration,” said Chloe Johnson, director of Extended Learning at SCESD. “It provides a wonderful opportunity for families to support and encourage their children's curiosity and ingenuity; with every invention, we take a step towards a brighter future where young minds can solve problems and bring positive changes to the world; let's celebrate each idea, foster a spirit of innovation, and empower the next generation of leaders and visionaries!” 

Concurrently, the San Jose Tech Interactive will be visiting Hartnell College to host a regional Tech Challenge trial, engaging students from Alisal Unified School Districts (AUSD) and SCESD, preparing students for the final showcase. 

“Our students arrive with diverse skills and abilities,” said Jose Fausto, director of Expanded Learning at AUSD. “Our mission is to nurture their growth by providing support and opportunities in STEAM, VAPA, academics, and sports through our Expanded Learning programs, empowering them to succeed in their education.”

At the heart of this STEM celebration is the keynote address by professional race car driver and race team owner Erin Vogel. In collaboration with Friends of Laguna Seca, Vogel, who has paved the way for women representation in motorsports, will deliver an inspiring message aimed at motivating the audience to break through barriers and reach for the stars.

“We are thrilled to work with The Hartnell College Foundation on this amazing opportunity to inspire the next generation to begin their journey in STEAM, and promote our upcoming IMSA race weekend,” said Lauri Eberhart, CEO for Friends of Laguna Seca. “Erin Vogel will be an excellent example of how creating space for women in motorsports or any other STEAM industry is paramount to its progress.”

The free family event will feature STEAM hands-on activities, speakers, physics demos, a reptiles’ den, art tables, food vendors, music, fun, and much more!
