Hartnell College Hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Reopening of the Gary Shaw Track and Bill Elliott Football Field
Salinas, CA – December 5, 2024 - Hartnell College proudly celebrated the grand reopening of the Gary Shaw Track and Bill Elliott Football Field on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by community members, Hartnell students, staff, and local leaders. This momentous event marked the completion of significant renovations funded by Measure T, alongside generous contributions from the Harden Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
“We have over 300 athletes, and they have an incredible facility to play on now,” said Dan Teresa, Dean of Academic Affairs, Athletics, Physical Education & Health. “What adds to the excitement is that the community also gets to use this.”
The ceremony featured remarks from Hartnell College administration, esteemed speakers, and students. Guests were treated to light refreshments, the opportunity to meet Hartnell College student-athletes, and an inaugural lap around the newly resurfaced track, symbolizing a renewed commitment to athletic excellence and community health.
The upgraded facilities promise to benefit student-athletes and the broader Salinas Valley community by providing a safe and high-quality environment for college-sponsored events, recreation, and fitness.
“As a community college, we always want to give our students and community our best, so how did we do?” said Michael Gutierrez, Superintendent/President of Hartnell Community College District while looking back at the alternating rows of maroon and gold. “Overall, we are excited to welcome everyone back.”
The Gary Shaw Track and Bill Elliott Football Field stand as tributes to two remarkable figures in Hartnell’s history. During the ceremony, Teresa fondly remembered the legacy of legendary coach Gary Shaw and former student-athlete and generous supporter Bill Elliott. Both men have left an indelible mark on Hartnell Athletics, inspiring generations of students to strive for greatness.
Hartnell College extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who attended the celebration, Measure T taxpayers, and contributions from community organizations for the ongoing support of Hartnell College and its students.
