Hartnell College’s year-old free student market El Mercado recognized as an Approved Blue Zones Organization
SALINAS, Calif., — Hartnell College’s free student market El Mercado has been recognized as an Approved Blue Zones Organization — an achievement that reflects a commitment to fostering a healthier, more connected community.
Established in 2010, the Blue Zones Project focuses on promoting healthier meal options across worksites, schools, restaurants and grocery stores. By aligning with this initiative, El Mercado continues to support students and families in making nutritious choices that contribute to a higher quality of life, improved productivity and reduced healthcare costs.
Hartnell celebrated the grand opening of El Mercado in April of 2024, established as one of many efforts led by the SOUL Center. At the market, students have access to free food, clothing, hygiene products, school supplies and other necessities.
Now, as an Approved Blue Zones Organization, El Mercado stands as a beacon of well-being within Hartnell, “embodying the shared goals of inspiring, encouraging and promoting healthy habits,” said Director of Student Affairs Mario Flores, who oversees Basic Needs and Mi CASA. “This recognition signals to students and community members alike that El Mercado is more than a food resource — it’s a place that supports social connection, academic success, and positive community impact.”
On average, El Mercado welcomes more than 4,100 student visits per semester, supporting a total of 6,142 households, including 1,284 children and 208 seniors within those families.
“Our Basic Needs team is incredibly proud to receive this recognition and remains steadfast in our mission to provide accessible, nutritious food to our students and the broader community,” said Flores. “Because when our students thrive, so does our community.”
Flores said the program would not be possible without strong community partnerships, singling out Monterey County Food Bank and Braga Ranch in Gonzales, “who donate weekly fresh produce, food, and staple pantry items — essential contributions that help ensure our students have access to nutritious and well-rounded meals."
The college will celebrate the recognition on Tuesday, April 29 at 12:30 p.m., inside the El Mercado (Building C-133), serving appetizers and refreshments.
About the Blue Zones Project
The Blue Zones Project is a community well-being initiative based on research into regions of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives—known as “Blue Zones.” Launched by Blue Zones LLC in partnership with organizations like Sharecare and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Blue Zones Project brings the lifestyle principles from these long-living communities into American towns and cities. The goal is to help people live better, longer lives by improving their surroundings — at home, work, school, and in the broader community. Find out more at www.info.bluezonesproject.com/home.
