SEASIDE, Calif. – Interim, Inc. welcomed 254 community members to the Embassy Suites in Seaside on May 29 for its annual Mental Health Service Recognition Awards and Art Show, celebrating individuals whose compassion, advocacy, service, and leadership strengthen Monterey County's mental health community.
Held during National Mental Health Awareness Month, the event brought together mental health professionals, peers, volunteers, advocates, community leaders, family members, and supporters for a day of recognition, inspiration, art, and celebration.
This year's theme, "Finding Your Voice," highlighted the power of self-expression, advocacy, and community connection. Throughout the event, speakers encouraged attendees to use their voices to support healing, reduce stigma, and build stronger communities.
The program featured welcoming remarks from Interim Executive Director Dr. Rhiyan Quiton, Monterey County Behavioral Health Director Melanie Rhodes, and Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue. Mayor Donohue presented a proclamation recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month and honoring the individuals, organizations, and advocates working to advance mental health awareness and support throughout Monterey County. Guests also enjoyed a consumer art exhibition showcasing the creativity and talents of local artists.
Each year, Interim presents three signature awards honoring individuals whose actions embody the values of compassion, hope, and community service. The awards are named in honor of Dr. David Soskin, former Medical Director of Monterey County Behavioral Health, and Kristin Hart, whose spirit of volunteerism and service continues to inspire others.
Special thanks go to the Soskin family for their continued sponsorship of the awards. Dr. Soskin was remembered throughout the event for his deep commitment to serving individuals experiencing mental illness and for his unwavering belief in the dignity and potential of every person.
This year's honorees included:
• Teresa Brunson, Clinical Services Director at Interim, Inc., who received the Dr. David Soskin Compassionate Service Honorarium for her compassionate leadership, authentic engagement, and unwavering commitment to supporting both clients and staff.
• Susana Ornelas Zendejas, Behavioral Health Aide, who received the Dr. David Soskin Compassionate Service Honorarium for her exceptional dedication to supporting clients with dignity, respect, and genuine care while helping individuals meet both clinical and everyday needs.
• Thi Velasquez, licensed clinician and advocate, who received the Dr. David Soskin Inspiring Hope Honorarium for using both lived experience and professional expertise to advocate for individuals and families while helping ensure their voices are heard.
• Thomas Calderon, who received the Dr. David Soskin Inspiring Hope Honorarium for inspiring others through his resilience, volunteerism, and commitment to supporting individuals living with mental illness and substance use challenges.
• Ricarda Rodriguez, who received the Kristin Hart Memorial Award for her many years of volunteer service, advocacy, and dedication to ensuring that community members—particularly Spanish-speaking residents—have access to information, support, and opportunities for connection and engagement.
In addition to the award presentations, Interim recognized members of its Success Over Stigma program for their contributions to mental health awareness and advocacy, as well as volunteers whose service and commitment support programs throughout the organization.
"Some of us have amplified our voices through microphones in front of large audiences, while others have chosen more reserved spaces and quiet places. What binds us is our shared commitment to use our voices—and our actions—to uplift those who may feel unheard or overlooked. We are grateful to everyone who helps increase mental health awareness and strengthen support throughout our community," said Dr. Rhiyan Quiton, Executive Director of Interim, Inc.
Interim, Inc. extends its gratitude to all award recipients, nominees, volunteers, artists, peer advocates, community partners, and mental health professionals whose efforts continue to create pathways to recovery, belonging, and support throughout Monterey County.
