San Carlos and 9th Ave.

Carmel/Monterey CA  Monterey Symphony continues its 77th season Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 3:00 PM with concerts featuring works by Beethoven, Weber, Jennifer Higdon, and at world premiere by John Wineglass featuring pianist Lara Downes. Both concerts include pre-concert lectures in the main concert hall. Lectures are 30 minutes and are held on Saturday 6:30-7:00 PM and on Sunday 2:00-2:30 PM. On Sunday, all concert attendees are welcome to stay for a post-concert Talk Back and a glass of wine with Music Director Jayce Ogren and Composer John Wineglass in the lobby.

“Our February concerts feature trailblazing pianist Lara Downes in the world premiere of The Great Migration, a new piano concerto by Monterey Symphony Composer-in-Residence John Wineglass,” says Jayce Ogren.

Concert three, Palo Corona meaning “Crown Tree,” is a concert about transformation, transcendence, salvation, and overcoming personal setbacks. “The program opens with Weber’s dramatic Overture to Der Freischützand also includes Jennifer Higdon’s transcendent blue cathedral,” says Ogren. Weber's Der Freischütz is a story about the redeeming power of love. Jennifer Higdon's blue cathedral represents one's travels over a lifetime and toward the afterlife. These works reveal the deep and sometimes mystical connections between the natural and supernatural worlds.

Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 7 brings the concert to a thrilling conclusion,” says Ogren. The work embodies bacchic, dance qualities, to the extent that Richard Wagner called it "The Apotheosis of Dance."
